Guillermo del Toro Developing Games

Guillermo del Toro, director of movies such as Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, and the upcoming Tolkien adaption The Hobbit,┬áis now making videogames. Del Toro told MTV News that

One of the things we’re announcing in the next few weeks is a big deal with a big company. We’re going to do games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting. It’s not a development deal. We’re going to do it. We’re going to do them. And we’re going to announce it soon enough.”

This is wonderful news. It’s nice to think that videogames are being respected as a viable medium nowadays, capable of delivering a deep and artistically-visioned experience. Ever since videogames were revolutionized for the general public with Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII on the PS1, games have been slowly ratcheting up to delivering an experience of this magnitude.

It’s possible the the videogame that he’s developing will be The Hobbit. He has expressed interest in developing a videogame based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novel in the past. Though he’s not officially tapped to be the director for the “Hobbit” movie due out in 2012, he may be working on the non-film side

Guillermo del Toro has proven himself in the film world over and over these past years. If a respected author’s vision can be interpreted successfully to videogames, such as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell series, then a director on the caliber of Guillermo del Toro bodes great things for the industry.
